ABB E-mobility is the division of the ABB Group, counting 100000 employees worldwide, dedicated to electrifying mobility. With 1400+ employees, global headquarters in Switzerland and a state-of-the-art production facility in San Giovanni Valdarno (Arezzo), ABB E-mobility has built over 14 years of world firsts: from Europe’s first 50 kW charger to the world’s first live Truck Megawatt Charger. Their mission is unambiguous: electrify mobility with seamless, efficient, flexible, operated and sustainable charging solutions.

There is a fundamental principle in lean manufacturing: if you cannot see the problem, you cannot solve it. Visual Management is the answer to that principle and ABB E-mobility’s System Integration area, where the final assembly and integration of charger systems takes place, is the arena where this project unfolds.

The goal is to design and implement a comprehensive visual management system for this critical area: from the production control board with KPIs, escalation rules and meeting cadence, to the material & WIP visual system with FIFO lanes, kanban cards and shortage signals, all the way down to workstation-level standard work visuals, covering critical steps, quality points, safety alerts and definition of done. The entire system is sustained by an audit checklist built around 5S discipline and a daily walk routine.

The work starts on the Gemba: assessing the current situation, mapping material, WIP and information flows and identifying pain points such as shortages, rework loops and waiting. Then comes design, piloting, operator and supervisor training and stabilization through daily tier meetings and KPI tracking.

For those who believe that a great visual system is as much engineering as it is design and want to see their work physically deployed on the walls of a real factory, this project offers an experience that is hard to replicate anywhere else.
