Stewardship-ownership as an alternative form of governance
Companies can have multiple type of shareholders (families, management team, PE funds, etc…). Research has shown that different type of shareholders and governance systems have an important impact on the company performance. A governance system that is having traction because of its combination of long-termism, clear purpose and pursuit of social impact is the steward-ownership, already present in companies such as ZEISS and Bosch. Steward-ownership can be considered as an alternative model to the public corporation with dispersed shareholders, which might be even more fit with the social and environmental challenges that companies are called to be responsible to. However, there is a dearth of research in this area.
The project focuses on exploring multiple cases of companies that embraced steward-ownership, and understanding why they pursued it, which were the enablers and the challenges, and what outcomes were generated from such processes.
