Logistics outsourcing is currently a growing phenomenon and is becoming a strategic lever with a significant impact on shippers’ business performance. In recent years, sustainable growth has become a key issue for Third Party Logistics (3PL) service providers, looking for more efficient and sustainable solutions supporting their business.

Green technologies, digital innovation, energy-efficient material handling equipment and low-emission building features are offering new opportunities for emission reduction as well as performance improvement. Besides corporate behaviour, international projects and academic literature have also started to show an increasing commitment in these subjects. This work aims at providing a deeper understanding on logistics sustainability in the Contract Logistics industry by mapping the green logistics solutions currently in place among 3PL providers, identifying environmental impact related to their logistics activities, and highlighting current and future challenges.
