To create value, companies need to open their boundaries and enable knowledge inflows and outflows with external partners. Governing innovation partnership, collaborations and interactions is becoming increasingly important in order to prevent any potential knowledge leakage and loss of control on proprietary and critical assets. As the traditional avenues of corporate growth become less attractive, many companies find the appeal of new venture strategies harder to resist. Though difficult to implement and often slow to repay investment, these strategies do offer the promise of facilitating entry into new business areas with innovative solutions. And for large companies with many layers of management and detailed control systems, ventures offer a new opportunity for managing innovation with an entrepreneurial focus.

The research project aims to investigate how companies manage emerging innovation projects through venturing practices, to chart which are the governance models adopted to maintain control and effectively manage it. The research will be developed through databases and secondary data analysis and corroborated through interviews within a sample of companies to understand which might be the emergent mechanisms and configurations company adopt to manage and coordinate on the edge innovation projects through venturing practices.
