Smart Cities are more and more pivotal in the EU agenda, especially considering the 2030 goals guiding the new Horizon Europe funds. Among them we can find, for example, Net Zero Cities enabled by new technologies and a strong digitalization process. The research focus is to map current European funds that are available to develop Smart City projects in different application areas, such as Smart Mobility, Smart Energy, Smart Tourism and many more. Moreover, it is fundamental to have insights on how European financing mechanism works: through databases and interviews, the objective of the thesis is to develop an internationally valid framework acting as a valuable instrument for policy makers and all stakeholders deciding to use European funds to implement innovative urban projects.
