This thesis investigates how purpose enables organizations to overcome the challenges produced by hybridity, defined as the combination of identities, forms, logics, or other core elements that would not conventionally go together (Smith & Besharov, 2014). Organizations increasingly operate in hybridized settings where multiple institutional logics coexist, producing internal conflicts, competing demands, ethical dilemmas, and resistance to change. These tensions can be especially pronounced in sectors that blend social missions and business imperatives, where divergent goals, values, norms, and identities must be reconciled. Educational institutions, for instance, often grapple with tensions between public service values, social equity goals, and business-like accountability or efficiency demands, making them an ideal context to explore how purpose can support logic alignment. This dissertation project aims to understand how a clearly defined and embedded shared sense of purpose can serve as an alignment mechanism that coordinates conflicting logics. As such, the thesis seeks to contribute both to research on hybridity, institutional logics, and corporate purpose, and to the practical management challenges faced by hybrid organizations. The study will adopt a qualitative methodology, focusing on a single revelatory case study of an educational institution that is facing contested logics and is attempting to reorient the organization around a single unifying purpose.
