It is possible to discuss the scope of the project that might be suitable for one or two students, and for a thesis with or without a discussant. The project is supported by two companies that will provide context and data for the framework/model development. If you are interested in this thesis project, please send an email with your CV, transcripts, indicate motivation to work on this topic and when you intend to graduate.

Challenge: successful circular operation depend on stable and abundant supply of returned end-of-life or end-of-use products; however, return management is subject to various uncertainties (e.g. quantity, quality, composition and timing of returns) and often acts as a bottleneck for scaling up of circular operations.

Objective: to develop a decision framework/tool to support management of product returns, and in particular, to examine the impact of alternative acquisition and collection strategies on the return rates of post-use products (cores).

Key tasks:

  1. review academic literature (and industrial reports) on returns management strategies (what are they? what is required for their deployment?), their impact on core collection rates and circular SC operations in general.
  2. examine industrial (best) cases (benchmarking).
  3. develop a decision framework/tool for determining returns management strategies (the framework should indicate the data required and set interdependences between data elements),
  4. apply the framework in case company(ies).

The methodology combines qualitative and quantitative approaches.
