SOL Group is an Italian industrial and medical gases company operating in 33 countries, with 7623 employees and 125 production plants worldwide. Recognized by TIME Magazine among the World’s Best Sustainable Companies in 2025, SOL combines deep technical expertise with a genuine commitment to innovation, constantly expanding into new market areas where technical gases play a central role. This project sits squarely at the intersection of those two ambitions.
The electric vehicle revolution is generating a wave of end-of-life lithium batteries and the recycling industry that has risen to handle them is still finding its footing. Before any battery can be safely shredded and processed, it must be discharged and the technologies available to do that are varied, contested and evolving fast. SOL wants to understand that landscape in depth.
The goal is to map the full ecosystem of lithium battery recycling technologies, with a special focus on comparison of existing technologies for battery discharge before shredding: who are the players, what do their solutions actually cost and deliver, how reliable are they and what references can they point to? The output is a structured report with a list of scouted companies with their technical, commercial and after-sales profiles, that will directly inform SOL’s strategy for entering this market.
The work is hands-on and outward-facing: academic and web-based scouting, direct outreach to technology providers via email and calls and rigorous benchmarking. The student will be embedded in SOL’s corporate Marketing and Technology departments, with the Innovation Director overseeing the project and the LiB technologies marketing manager serving as day-to-day tutor.
For those who want to do real market intelligence work on one of the most talked-about sustainability challenges of the decade and see their analysis shape a company’s commercial strategy, this is the project to pursue.
Basic chemistry knowledge and a good command of technical Italian and English are required; German or Spanish are a plus.
